En-Chant-Ment
A Workshop on Chant from Around the World
Delve into the wonderful world of chant! Since humans first began to vocalize, there has been chanting. Listen to chant from around the world and learn to build your own!
For the first half of the day, we will listen to chants from around the world. In the second half of the day, we will make our own chant, both drone-based and rhythmic.
No singing or musical experience is required!
People who want to solo will say so before we begin the afternoon, and the others will provide the grounding—drone notes, basic rhythms, or witnessing. You are welcome to change your mind about soloing as the afternoon progresses.
Feel free to bring singing bowls, rattles, claves, rainsticks, QUIET bells, doumbeks, or other QUIET drums (no djembes, congas, dununs, etc., please).

Melanie Spiller is a medieval musician, singer, private and group voice teacher, and choral conductor in the San Francisco Bay Area. She specializes in the works of Hildegard von Bingen and in building her own organic chant on anything with a drone or a rhythm, including the elevator and the washing machine. She is proud to announce that her 10-year old frog has begun singing the drone along with several recordings—right on the pitch!
